Love And Marriage

Be Mine

When we were children we had Valentine’s Day Parties where we exchanged cards with candy attached that said, “Be Mine.” I remember a boy giving me a heart shaped comb with mirror that had “precious moments” on it! I was so excited in 1st grade, but when I got home I was told he could not be mine! He wanted me to be his girlfriend, and I was told I was too young. I was, but I realize now, we have something God put in us from a young age to be loved!

To Be Loved

Love is a wonderful thing!! We have an innate desire to be loved, to be held, to be cherished, to be understood, to be known by someone who will be there. This is because we need God, and we truly want to be loved and known by Him. But He also put a need to be loved here on earth by another human being. It starts when we are born, we want and need to be loved by our parents, family, and friends. Then as we grow, we want to be loved by someone of the opposite sex. God created man and said, “it is not good he is alone.” All that was before him was not comparable to what woman would bring to the table.

Comparable

God wanted to make Adam a wife that was similar but different. He saw the need for man to have a woman that was comparable to him. God created them different in many ways but in a way that they compliment each other. Adam needed a help-meet. Can you imagine the love he must have had for her? No sin, nothing to cause an argument, to be completely and wholly one. This is what we strive for in our own marriages, but will never attain because we live in a fallen world. We have to learn to love and accept our imperfections.

One

When you get married you are to become one, and to love one another. Isn’t that why we get married? To become one with someone and spend our lives together. We don’t want to do it on our own any more, we want to have a life with our spouse that says, “I’m loved.” Sometimes we get so caught up in making that life, our home, building a family, career, and life together that we forget about loving one another.

Loving

How do you show love to your spouse? Are you so consumed that you think that they know that you love them? Do you tell them daily, “I love you.”? How often do you take time to plan something special for the one you love? Do your actions, words, and tone say, “I truly love you.”? The need to be loved is so great, and if we don’t give this precious gift to our spouse, they may just find it elsewhere. It could be in the form of children, friends, or someone else who give them the time and affection they need.

Valentine’s Day

This is the week of Valentines Day, and even though we all stop to love on our spouse on this day and do something special, (don’t forget), we need to look for ways everyday to confirm our love. Sit down and think about all the love you felt when you met, dated, and fell in love. Write down why you fell in love, and how has that love grown. If it hasn’t, you have some work to do! Step back in time, and create something special for the one you love! Do something thoughtful, something unexpected, something that says, “I love you with all of my heart.” Talk can be cheap if you don’t have action to back it up!

Love And Marriage

We say, “love and marriage,” as it’s a given that it just goes together, but it is really something that we have to work on, press toward, and link together. Some marriages have no love at all, and some are amazing examples of God’s great plan. The latter takes work and commitment! It all starts with where we get that love. Where does love for our spouse come from? Infatuation, intrigue, desire, is where we start. Love comes with time, forgiveness, trials, and learning to become one. Ultimately, it comes from God! We can’t love until we learn to love, and be loved by Jesus. Time drawing closer in prayer, fasting, and the Word is where we truly learn to love, and how to be loved. This is our starting point!!

Prayer

Our prayer for you today is that you start each day with Jesus, then as you grow in God, you will learn how to truly love your spouse. We all have hurts, hangups, and pasts that tell us love is not attainable. But God! He teaches us as He heals our hurts how to be loved! Pray today that the Lord not only helps you to truly love and show love to your spouse, but that He heals, helps, and restores you to be loved. To receive love!

Scripture

Monday: 1 Corinthians 16:14 says, “Do everything in love.” When we are children this is so easy, love just comes out of us! Remember to be childlike in how freely you love your spouse!

Tuesday: 1 John 4:16 says, “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” To be loved we have to know the love of God! Pray today you really know God loves you!

Wednesday: Genesis 2:18 says, “And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.” This is God’s plan! Pray over your marriage today that you would see His plan and embrace it!!

Thursday: Proverbs 3:3-4 says, “Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.” Love and faithfulness speaks of becoming one! God will bless your marriage for all to see when you love your spouse and are faithful!

Friday: Song of Solomon 8:6-7 says, “Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm, for love is strong as death, jealousy is fierce as the grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire, the very flame of the LORD. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. If a man offered for love all the wealth of his house, he would be utterly despised.” Pray you are loving your spouse with a fire that cannot be quenched today!

Saturday: Ephesians 4:22 says, “Be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.” Create a life of love and forgiveness!! Show your spouse how much you love them not just telling them!!

Sunday: Psalm 143:8 says, “Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.” This love is an example of how we should love our spouse and it all starts with love for God and time with Him! Pray you give unfailing love to your spouse as you spend time with Jesus!
